National Youth Jazz Collective Young Musicians Programme at Kings Place
Workshops, jam sessions and performance opportunities for Young Jazz Musicians

The Young Musicians Programme is aimed at young musicians at all levels, studying any instrument. The programme consists of workshops with professional musicians, led by Issie Barratt from the National Youth Jazz Collective focusing on small group improvisation. Each Sunday workshop ends with a concert by the NYJC professional quartet followed by performances by the young musicians to student's friends and family. This is a great opportunity for all young jazz musicians to work with expert jazz educators who are also active members of the international jazz scene, working in bespoke ensembles made up of young musicians of a similar standard.

Life Force Festival: Jazz Workshop Day - Alton College, Hampshire

►►Wednesday 15th February, 10am - 5pm; informal performance at 6pm

During this exciting workshop day led by tutors from NYJC, participants will work on material, focusing on developing their improvisation skills.

NYJC weekends Helston Community College, Cornwall

These action-packed weekends are aimed at young jazz musicians aged 8 - 18 of any instrument and standard, who are interested in developing their skills in small group improvisation. This is great opportunity to work with NYJC tutors, all of whom are expert jazz educators and internationally renowned performers in an informal and fun environment. Both days start at 10am, the Saturdays finish at 5pm. Each weekend will end with an informal performance for family and friends at 3pm on the Sunday.

Watermill Jazz Young Composers Award 2012

Watermill Jazz presents 47 phenomenal jazz gigs a year in Dorking, Surrey. Continuing their support for young jazz musicians and composers, they are delighted to announce the Watermill Jazz Young Composers Award 2012 which they are offering in association with the National Youth Jazz Collective. The award consists of 2 cash prizes for wholly original jazz compositions written for Jazz Octet (trumpet, trombone, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, piano, bass and drums).

1st Prize £500
2nd Prize £250

Applicants must be 19 years of age or under on the 30th September 2012.

The judging panel will consist of the National Youth Jazz Collective’s Founder and Artistic Director, Issie Barratt, pianist and composer Nikki Iles and Watermill Jazz Chairman Roger Hind.

Finalists’ entries will be performed on 13th September 2012 at Watermill Jazz by members of the National Youth Jazz Collective, led by Issie Barratt and Nikki Iles. The winners will be interviewed about their compositions and the evening will conclude with a second performance of the winning entries and presentation of the prizes.
